Well, needless to say, this year has been…. well it’s been something. Calling it crazy doesn’t even begin to cover it, but the craziest part is that I’m pretty sure my next year is going to be even crazier. Fortunately for me, the new crazy should be the good kind. In case anyone reading this doesn’t know/hasn’t heard (which, if you are here and haven’t heard, please email me, I’m really curious how you found my blog), I’ve accepted the over-winter Sr. System Administrator position down at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. That means that here come January 3rd I begin my long journey down to the bottom of the freaking planet. If that sounds crazy to you, don’t worry, it seems just as crazy to me too. I just also happen to be incredibly excited about it.
So here in just about a week and a half I will board an early flight from my home town of Colorado Springs, CO for a short flight up to Denver, and then over to San Francisco. Thanks to the aforementioned craziness of 2020, I’ll then be put up in a hotel for a week of isolation while awaiting the results of my first COVID-19 test. Once that week is up, we’ll be heading on a chartered flight from San Francisco to Christchurch, New Zealand (we being the travel group I’m in, dubbed Cohort 5) where we will then be handed over to the Kiwi government and placed in managed isolation for another two weeks with another two COVID tests. Once that two weeks is up,
my custody will be remanded to I’ll be transferred back to the U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP) and I’ll get to wait for what’s called my ice flight. The ice fight is your flight from New Zealand down to Antarctica (The Ice). Hopefully I won’t have to wait too long for that flight but I guess we shall see. All I can say is that I’m glad I’ll still have internet while in isolation so I can binge watch some shows I’ve been meaning to get around to. I’ll also have my Xbox so maybe I’ll finally end up finishing the Red Dead Redemption 2 campaign…
I think I’ll go ahead and wrap up here, I still have some cleaning and packing and general taking care of stuff that needs to be done. Keep an eye out for more posts, I’ll try and do one at least once a week once I depart. Next one won’t be until after I leave, going to focus on getting ready and spending the holidays (safely) with my immediate family.
